The Mission of a Lifetime
Hearts raced as our transport vehicle turned down the long gravel drive leading to our designated target – the squatty cinder-block structure dwarfed by the imposing communications tower to the rear of the open field.
How could I have known that what I would encounter on the other side of the doorway to this command center would direct the course of my life for as long as I would live? But we had come too far; the mission was afoot. To abort now would place the integrity of our small band of brothers at risk.
Following the lead of our courageous commander, we disembarked. And as the “thunk” of the slamming Country Squire doors pierced the silence, everyone within earshot knew that the men of Troop 5, Boy Scouts of America – North Georgia Council had arrived for their scheduled tour of 1,000-watt daytimer, WCON, Cornelia! And I was hooked.
By age 15 I was named director of volunteer custodial services – I emptied trash and vacuumed the floors without pay. My abilities were soon rewarded with one 3-hour weekend shift, then another. And before I knew it I was on the air playing the best in country music for two hours everyday after school.
Blah, blah, blah…then radio while attending the University of Georgia, followed by Q-94, Richmond, Virginia, middays at Z-93, Atlanta, production director of Power 99-7, Atlanta, and finally launching Randy Reeves Voice at Large in 1988.
What can I say, it’s in my blood. I’m a lifer. I sit in my basement and talk into a can. I’d be lost if I had to get a real job. Thanks for helping me keep the dream alive!
